5 Top Free VPN for Canada in 2026: Safe and User-friendly

Last updated: October 2026. The Best Free VPN for Canada in 2026: Quick Summary

• 🥇 ExpressVPN: Although it doesn’t offer a free plan, you can test it out risk-free with its 30-day money-back guarantee (available to new users only). Excellent security features, great streaming support (including Netflix Canada), quick and dependable servers in Montreal and Toronto, and user-friendly apps for all major operating systems are all provided.

Although not perfect, Canada’s privacy laws are respectable. Internet service providers (ISPs) are legally obligated to hold onto specific customer data for a maximum of six months under Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). IP addresses, websites visited, and more may fall under this category. Therefore, even if you believe you are using the internet securely, your ISP may be monitoring your online activities.

Furthermore, as a member of the Five Eyes alliance, Canada shares intelligence information with other nations, including communication logs and internet traffic that are gathered within its boundaries.

An excellent method to safeguard your online privacy in Canada is to use a VPN, which makes it impossible to track your online activities. Additionally, it can increase your gaming, streaming, and torrenting speeds if your ISP is limiting them.

There are a few decent free VPNs for Canada, however a cheap premium VPN will usually give faster speeds, more servers and better streaming support. The comparison below is based on the features and limits published on each provider official site, not on hands-on testing claims.

Disclaimer: Strict no-logging policies prevent the VPNs listed below from monitoring—or even seeing—your online activities. This implies that you are in charge of how you use a VPN, so please make sure you abide by all relevant guidelines. Copyright infringement is not something that my coworkers and I support.

October 2026 update: In this update, we fact-checked the article, corrected the pricing notes to point readers to official sites for current offers, and removed hands-on testing language. Free plan limits and server lists change often.

Best Free VPNs for Canada Right Now – Quick Summary

Editor’s Choice

• ExpressVPN: A leading paid VPN for Canada in 2026. It does not offer a free plan. A money-back guarantee is available on new subscriptions, subject to its terms. Check the official site for the current price.
• 🥈 Proton VPN: Excellent free VPN with limitless data and user-friendly apps, but it prevents file sharing.
• 🥉Hide.me: A good VPN that is 100% free, has unlimited data, and is secure, but does not support streaming.
• The Hotspot Shield: Good free VPN with mobile ads for general web browsing and unlimited data. Windscribe simple VPN for streaming, but the monthly allotment is limited to 10 GB.

1. ExpressVPN: Best Overall VPN for Canada

ExpressVPN is a well known paid VPN for Canada. Although it does not have a free plan, new users can use its money-back guarantee under the terms on its official site. It publishes a no-logs policy that has been independently audited.

It enables torrenting on Canadian servers, maintains the fastest speeds available, integrates with all of the major streaming services, has four dependable server locations in Canada, and has excellent security features.

You can select the closest servers for the fastest connection from those in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto (two locations).

You should choose nearby servers whenever you can because a VPN’s speed is primarily determined by the distance the internet signal must travel (as well as the encryption process).

ExpressVPN lists servers in several Canadian cities. Connection quality depends on your location, network and the server you choose, so use the guarantee period to test it on your own connection if you buy it.

Additionally, ExpressVPN offers excellent security features and extras.

• No logs. Its policy, which guarantees ExpressVPN doesn’t store your data, has been independently audited and validated numerous times.
• Complete protection against leaks. Your IP address may be exposed by DNS, WebRTC, and IPv6 leaks, which ExpressVPN guards against. My actual IP address was never compromised during the numerous tests I conducted on servers located in all three Canadian cities.
• Split tunneling. You can select which traffic is routed through the VPN with this handy feature.
• Superior Defense. This feature consists of an adult site blocker, an ad blocker, and Threat Protection, which stops trackers and keeps you from visiting potentially harmful websites.
• ShuffleIP. ShuffleIP stops trackers from following you online by automatically updating your IP address whenever you visit a new website or application. It accomplishes this automatically on all devices without altering your location or cutting off your VPN connection.

ExpressVPN is the best VPN for torrenting and streaming. In addition to Canadian-based services like CBC Gem, CTV, and TVA Canada, it is compatible with over 100 streaming services, such as Amazon Prime Video, DAZN, Netflix Canada, and Disney+.

Additionally, it effectively prevents ISP throttling. ExpressVPN has excellent security to conceal your downloads from prying eyes and permits torrenting on its Canadian servers.

Additionally, ExpressVPN is very easy to use. It’s dedicated router app makes it incredibly simple to set up on a router (the majority of free VPNs don’t even support manual router setups), and when the app launches, it has an auto-connect setting that instantly connects to your chosen Canadian server location.

Bottom Line: The greatest VPN for Canada is without a doubt ExpressVPN. It is highly secure, features extras like split-tunneling and Advanced Protection, has dependable servers in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, and supports torrenting and streaming very well.

2. Proton VPN: Excellent Free Plan for Canada With No Data Limits

One of the few VPNs available that offers unlimited data without advertisements is Proton VPN, which also has a fantastic free plan.

Although it only supports one connection, you can configure the VPN on a router to link all of your devices to the VPN (most free plans don’t allow router configurations).

Additionally, it offers access to servers in five countries: the US, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, and Romania, and it doesn’t throttle your speeds.

Proton VPN offers great privacy and security features, such as full-disk encryption, which makes all of your hard drive’s data unreadable.

Further evidence that Proton VPN doesn’t store or share user data can be found in its transparency report and the fact that an outside security company has validated the VPN’s no-logs policy.

The open-source nature of Proton VPN’s apps, which lets anybody examine their code for security flaws, is another feature I appreciate. Furthermore, every one of its apps is audited.

Due to its ease of use, Proton VPN is an excellent choice for novices. For your location, it automatically connects to the fastest and best server (for Canada, this will probably be the US).

Helpful explanations are included with its settings, making it simple to understand which ones are relevant to you and how to adjust them.

Unfortunately, Proton VPN’s free tier does not support streaming or torrenting, but you might occasionally be able to access Netflix and Amazon Prime (I found that they worked about half the time).

Additionally, the free plan doesn’t come with many additional services (like split-tunneling and VPN Accelerator, which increase speeds).

Support for streaming and torrenting is available when you upgrade to ProtonVPN’s paid plans. The premium plans come with 10 connections, a very good ad blocker (NetShield), and access to servers in 117 countries, including Canada.

Bottom Line: For Canadians, Proton VPN is an excellent free VPN. Full-disk encryption, full-leak security, and open-source (and audited) apps are among its robust security features, along with limitless data and user-friendly apps. By upgrading to a paid plan, you can access servers in Canada and get full streaming and P2P support.

3. hide.me: Free VPN for Canada That’s Unrestricted Bandwidth + Secure

Regardless of how much time you spend online, you can use hide.me, a very secure VPN for Canada with unlimited data, to safeguard your connections.

Although there are no free servers in Canada, there are servers in the US that are close enough for fast speeds, as well as in more than five other places, including Germany and the Netherlands.

Great security features are also available on hide.me. StealthGuard, a feature of the free plan, is one of my favorites.

With the help of this sophisticated kill switch, you can regulate how strictly the VPN blocks your internet connection when it is not in use, keeping you safe online.

Additionally, it has an app-based kill switch, which allows you to either restrict which apps and websites need the VPN connection or bind the device’s whole internet connection to the VPN.

Split-tunneling, one of the great extra features included in the free plan, allows you to increase your download speeds by sending only P2P traffic through a torrent app.

Although it isn’t very noticeable, it has no support for streaming, torrenting, or routers, and it has speed limits.

For specialized protection on various networks, connection automation is also available. Ask, ignore network, enable VPN, or disable VPN are the options available to you for Ethernet connections, secure Wi-Fi networks, and unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

On public networks, for instance, you can configure the VPN always to connect, but it to ask you what you want to do on your home network.

Paid monthly and annual plans with 10 connections and servers spread across 58 locations are available on hide.me.

Bottom Line: For Canadians, hide.me is a very safe, free VPN. The free plan offers good speeds, access to servers in the US that are close to Canada, and excellent security features and extras like automated connections, split-tunneling, and StealthGuard. Additionally, it has limitless data.

4. Hotspot Shield: Best VPN for Browsing the Web (With Unlimited Data)

Hotspot Shield’s free plan, which offers unlimited data, is excellent for web browsing. Also, the free plan offers good features and easy-to-use apps, such as automatic launch options that ensure you never browse without protection.

Excellent security is also offered by the provider’s free plan, which includes DNS leak protection and perfect forward secrecy.

Also included is Auto-protect, which automatically establishes a VPN connection whenever your device connects to public, unprotected Wi-Fi.

However, only servers in the US, UK, and Singapore are included in the free plan; no servers in Canada are. If that’s a deal-breaker, you might want to get ExpressVPN.

Additionally, streaming is not supported, and you are only allowed to use one device with the free plan. Also, if you want unlimited data on your mobile device, you must watch advertisements every 15 minutes. Furthermore, the free plan does not support streaming or torrenting.

One benefit is that you have access to an extremely user-friendly app. It only takes a few seconds to locate and connect to a server, and I appreciate that most settings and features have clear explanations. On the free plan, split-tunneling is also available.

The premium version of Hotspot Shield offers additional features like streaming support and access to servers located in 85 countries, including Canada.

Bottom Line: Hotspot Shield’s unlimited data makes it a good option for safe web browsing. Additionally, it offers user-friendly apps, robust security, and comparatively quick speeds. However, it restricts you to one device and servers in three countries (Canada is not available).

5. Windscribe: User-Friendly Free VPN for Streaming

Popular streaming services like Netflix Canada, Amazon Prime, and Disney+, as well as less well-known ones like DAZN and Crave, are compatible with Windscribe’s free plan, which grants access to servers in more than ten countries, including Canada.

Also, when you sign up with your email, you get 10 GB for streaming. It is also a very user-friendly VPN with an easy-to-use interface that supports an infinite number of connections and applications.

Its security features, like Auto-Secure Networks and R.O.B.E.R.T., are excellent. The first is an effective malware, ad, and tracker blocker that also blocks clickbait and porn and gambling websites.

As the name implies, Auto-Secure Networks activates the VPN automatically whenever your device comes across unfamiliar networks (much like Hotspot Shield and hide.me‘s network automation).

However, unlike ExpressVPN, which offers great live chat support for both free and paid users, Windscribe lacks these features. Additionally, it lacks advanced features like Proxy Gateway, Secure Hotspot, router support (which Proton VPN offers), and more.

Ad blocker access, servers in 69 countries, and unlimited data are all included in Windscribe’s paid plans.

Bottom Line: Windscribe’s free plan offers good streaming support and easy-to-use apps. Additionally, it has servers in Canada and a few other nations. It offers reasonable costs along with excellent security features like Auto-Secure Networks and R.O.B.E.R.T.

Quick Comparison Table

Testing Methodology: Ranking & Comparison Criteria

How we evaluate: This ranking is based on information published on each provider official site and in its privacy policy, including free plan limits, Canadian server availability, device support and security features. We do not claim hands-on testing, and we do not publish personal test results. Disclosure: Some links in this post may be affiliate links. If you buy through them, SpyIdea may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

• We limited the list to free VPNs with servers in Canada or in nearby countries, because Canadian services and banking may need a Canadian or nearby server location.
• We checked that each VPN states strong security, such as AES 256 encryption and a no-logs claim backed by an audit or a clear privacy policy where available.
• I gave a large data allowance top priority. Most free VPNs impose stringent data limits on you. One of the few exceptions is Proton VPN, which offers an unlimited data plan at no cost. I put fast speeds to the test. Although it slows down your connection speeds, encryption helps VPNs protect your data online. ExpressVPN was by far the fastest VPN on this list, and I tested and verified that all of them maintain fast speeds.
• I chose free VPNs with reasonably priced paid subscriptions. All of the VPNs I’ve mentioned above provide reasonably priced premium plans and deals, along with a money-back guarantee, in case you decide to upgrade to a paid plan.

Disadvantages and Risks of Using a Free VPN from Anywhere

• Insufficient security. Many free VPNs lack crucial security features that are necessary for online safety. This includes a kill switch, a no-logs policy, and 256-bit AES encryption, which all help to protect your online privacy and stop Canada from sharing your information with the other 5 Eyes Alliance members.
• IP addresses that have been blacklisted. Generally speaking, free VPNs don’t change their IP addresses as frequently as paid VPNs. This implies that websites can block you from accessing them more easily.
• Data sales. Certain free VPN services record your online activities and then sell the information to outside parties, who use it to target you with advertisements. Selecting a VPN with a stringent no-logs policy is crucial for protecting your privacy.
• Restricted security features. In order to protect you from sophisticated threats and ad targeting, the majority of free VPNs do not offer access to premium security features like ad, tracker, and malware blockers.

Free Paid VPNs for Canada vs. Paid VPNs for Canada

The free VPNs on my list have crucial security features like leak protection, AES 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and a no-logs policy. Additionally, some of them have sophisticated security features like perfect forward secrecy or servers that only use RAM.

Unfortunately, the majority of free VPNs lack the features found in premium VPNs. They typically don’t support streaming or torrenting, have few server options (usually none in Canada), lack multiple device connections, impose data caps, and might even slow you down.

For instance, hide.me only permits one device connection and does not support streaming, but it offers unlimited data and access to servers in eight different countries. Windscribe allows streaming but caps your monthly data at 10 GB.

Proton VPN only has one device connection and five server locations, but it offers excellent security and unlimited data. Although Hotspot Shield does not support streaming and imposes advertisements, it also offers unlimited data.

Paid VPN plans, however, come with a lot more features, such as a vast server network with servers in 100+ countries, unlimited data and speeds, support for streaming and torrenting, and multiple or unlimited device connections. If you are studying in the United States rather than Canada, our companion guide to student friendly VPNs for the USA compares the discounts and plans worth considering.

There are good free VPN plans out there (including the ones listed above), but premium VPNs are better overall. Here’s an easy way to compare:

Do Not Use These Free VPNs for Canada in 2026: Here Is Why

• SuperVPN. Users are at risk from SuperVPN since it logs private information like IP address and browser type. Along with missing a number of important security features, it has a history of serious data breaches.
• Hola VPN. Hola VPN is not regarded as secure. You connect using someone else’s IP address and vice versa because it works on a peer-to-peer (P2P) basis. This configuration enables others to use your intellectual property for immoral or unlawful purposes, putting you at risk. It also has a history of jeopardizing user privacy.
• VPN Tuxler. TuxlerVPN’s dubious privacy practices include tracking your contact information, browser data, and website activities. The company also says it shares this information with third parties.
• The AceVPN. In addition to lacking specialized device apps and essential security features like a kill switch, AceVPN necessitates manual setup. Moreover, it offers a restricted range of server locations.
• Phone Guardian. Phone Guardian only encrypts your data, which limits its usefulness. It isn’t very effective because it lacks other common VPN features like changing your IP address and location.
• Hoxx VPN. Because Hoxx VPN logs your information, including your IP address and online activities, and may keep this data even after you stop using it, it is not advised for people who are worried about their privacy.
• TouchVPN. With servers spread across more than 80 locations, TouchVPN boasts a sizable network, quite impressive for a free VPN. Nevertheless, it logs your browsing history and IP address.

The Best Brands That Were Not Included

• Urban VPN. Urban VPN is a very dubious VPN. Its privacy policy raises concerns because it lacks dependable customer support and functions as a peer-to-peer VPN, which means other users share your personal IP address and vice versa.
• TunnelBear: Based in Toronto, Canada. Check the TunnelBear official site for current plans and data limits, because its free plan availability and terms have changed in recent years.
• Avira Phantom VPN. Avira Phantom VPN offers a good free plan that includes fast speeds, unlimited connections, and servers located in 35 different countries. Nevertheless, its 500 MB limit is only sufficient for browsing, and its desktop applications do not allow you to select the server you wish to connect to.
